VIRTUE OF THE MONTH
The virtue of the month for May is Equality. The virtue of equality aligns itself closely to justice. It is not about treating people the same, but with the same standard. As Jesus said “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.” (Luke 11:46). At school, we show equality by teaching the students about rules and how to treat others.
CROWNING OF MARY
The Crowning of Mary will take place on Wednesday, May 25th. We ask that every student bring in a flower(s) for the Crowning.
FORT MCMURRY FUNDRAISER
We as a school community would like to help the victims of the Fort McMurray disaster. We will be having a Non-Uniform Day . Students who wish to support this fundraiser will be allowed to come to school in non-uniform and are asked to bring in a donation of their choice. Let us show our support to the victims who have been hit by this devastation. If you are writing a cheque, please make it payable to St. Bernadette School as the school is going to send in a cheque to the Red Cross in one lump sum.
COMMUNICATION
Dear Families,
I would like to thank you for your patience as we navigate through our new communication system. At the beginning of this year we switched to a more collaborative system where multiple staff can contribute to a newsletter that is meaningful and beneficial to all families. We also wanted to move away from sending out mass emails as we were finding that the system was unreliable.
At first the switch seemed seamless. After a few months we became aware of several issues and were unprepared for the continuous hurdles we faced. Over the last few months we have been operating under solving one problem just to have another problem replace it. It has caused families to miss newsletters, rushed efforts by us to get a newsletter out which has caused errors and missing information, and a lack of continuity in our communication practice. The goal is to have a system that is efficient, cost effective, and professional. So far we have not reached our goal, however, I hope that with this last upgrade and correction, we can finally have a communication system that is worthy of our school.
In the meantime, we will continue to send out PDF versions of our newsletter via email and to update our school website with current issues of the newsletter. We know we have many options moving forward with how we communicate with parents and we are currently looking into those options. We hope that after this week our issues are finally resolved. Until then, we will continue the current practice.

Students who have been absent must have an absent note on file with the days & reason of absenteeism along with the parent signature. PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY
Friday May 6th is our annual Principal for a Day. This year Mr. Grayson Wilson-Palm is our honourary principal. As principal he will have the ability to make some temporary changes around the school. These announcements will be made at the end of the day tomorrow and throughout the day on Friday.
To give you a “heads-up” there are a couple of announcements that you should be aware of (please know that these announcements are meant to be surprises to the students and will be delivered tomorrow). The first announcement is that Friday will be a non-uniform day. There is no theme and students will be allowed to wear appropriate clothing of their choice. The next announcement is BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Day. This will allow students to bring their own devices from home to school. They will participate in what is called a “Genius Hour” in which they will work productively and creatively on a project. The “Genius Hour” will look different from class to class. The rest of the day the device should be kept in their backpack. There is no pressure to bring in a device and if a student does not have a device with them, the school will make every effort to provide one. The school is also not responsible for any lost or damaged devices.
MOTHER’S DAY TEA
Mother’s Day Tea will be on Thursday, May 5th from 9:00-11:00. There will be our morning Mass led by the Grades 1 & 4. Following Mass, we will gather in the parish hall for light refreshments. Students will perform to entertain our guests. Notices have been sent out so we can prepare in advance. Please return forms back to the school ASAP. If any Dad’s would like to volunteer for that morning with setting up, refreshments & clean-up, please contact the school office.

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU
MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU.
STAR WARS DAY 2016
May the 4th, is universal Star Wars day where kids and fans alike celebrate the magic of the films and industry. It is a fun day where those who are into the films and books get a chance to dress up to celebrate the day. With Star Wars being as heavily involved in literature as it is with its films (graphic novels, comics, novels, etc.) it has provided another source for children to get into reading.
For those who may not know, the original story line was heavily borrowed from ancient samurai myths, and the Christian faith. One can find several online resources that speak to its Christian influences. Its reference to Christianity has even been used in high school religion courses.
Tomorrow, I am allowing students who wish to come in full costume to do so. Wearing a Star Wars hat or t-shirt does not equate a costume and therefore it will not be allowed. I have some comic books based on superheroes to give away as prizes to classrooms. We ask that you keep the lightsabers and blasters at home as we have a very strict no weapons policy. Those that have the lightsaber handle with no sword will be allowed.
I look forward to seeing some of the children in the school celebrating the day.
On a similar note, don’t forget that this Saturday, May 7th, is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY. Many comic book stores, including Toy Traders in Langley, will be giving away free comic books. Please attend this event with your child as some of the comics are geared towards an older audience.

VIRTUE OF THE MONTH
The virtue for the Month of April is forgiveness. The Gr.2’s have just received their first Reconciliation and have a deeper and truer understanding of what it means to forgive. Asking for forgiveness is not just saying sorry, but making an effort “to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin”. What this looks like in a school, is for students to understand that after they ask for forgiveness one must make efforts to help correct whatever wrong was committed. This is done in away that is beneficial to everyone involved and promotes a sense of community, understanding, and healing that is much needed in our world today.

SCHOOL TENNIS PROGRAM
Tennis BC will be at our school on April 11th, 12th, 14th, and 18th providing children with Tennis lessons. We are excited to have them in our school. We continually look for ways to bring in organizations or venture out to give students experiences in the realm of physical education that they might not have done otherwise. Currently we have done this through our Outdoor Adventure Club, Curling BC visit, Skating at Newton Arena, and soon with Tennis BC visiting the school.
