 READERS CHOICE WINNER

St. Bernadette School was voted “Best Elementary School” in Surrey.  This is a great honour and we as a school community should be very proud that several Surrey community members took upon themselves to cast votes for our school as the best out of all the independent and public schools in the city.

On Feb. 23rd you will see our school listed in the Best of the Surrey Now section of the paper.  Please share this recognition with family and friends as we are all proud and lucky to be apart of this wonderful school community!

SCHOOL RANKINGS

Once again the Fraser Institute published their school rankings for all schools in British Columbia.  Out of 956 schools, St. Bernadette Elementary was ranked 52nd.  This puts us into the top 5% in all of BC and establishes us as one of the top schools in Surrey.  We are very proud of our ranking:

http://britishcolumbia.compareschoolrankings.org/elementary/St_Bernadette/Surrey/Report_Card.aspx

We should be proud of our school, however I do caution putting too much celebration and weight into our ranking defining us as a great school – we are more than just a ranking.  These rankings are primarily based on an assessment called the FSA that is written in Grade 4 and 7 each year. This ranking is based on a sets of assessments that are a snapshot of a particular group of children at a particular time in the year.  Although we are excited about our ranking this year, next year our ranking may go up or down based on how students wrote their assessments this year.  I believe as a school we are much more than an assessment.  I look at what we offer our students and families in their overall development and growth.  I believe we are a school that values the whole child, promotes a family centred community that is safe and welcoming, values preparing our children for excellence academically, socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually, and ensures that all that we do is Christ centred.

I am very pleased with all teachers and staff in the school and their attention to preparing our students for this assessment.  Please congratulate them and thank them for their excellence in providing one of the best educational experiences for your children that the province has to offer.  That pride is not tied to a ranking, but tied to the work we all do – parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, parishioners, school staff –  for our children in our school community.

STINGERS CLUB

Thursday, March 9th is early dismissal (12:15) Stingers Club will be available until 6:00pm.

PARENT SURVEY

TRACK AND FIELD

It is hard to believe with all the snow we have been receiving that spring sports is starting up soon.  For the spring St. Bernadette’s offers Track and Field for grade 3 – 7 students.  Track and Field typically has the largest participation of any sport (usually over 100 students participating) and with the large amount of students to train and supervise we are in need of volunteers. There are many areas to help with, but we are very much in need of support in the following areas:

Monday, Wednesday and Friday Mornings – 8:10am – 8:45am – conditioning practice

St. Bernadette Track Meet – Thursday April 25th – All Day – Concession Stand and handing out ribbons at the finish line.

SOUTH SURREY CATHOLIC ACADEMY

The CISVA Superintendent’s Office, along with Archbishop Michael Miller have been in talks with a parent group from Star of the Sea on the start up of a Catholic high school in South Surrey.  In the upcoming months they will be formalizing a financing proposal and strategic plan for this endeavour.  Currently they are asking that families of new students to their school to put up a $25,000 bond/family to generate the funds required to build the school.  They are also asking new families to pledge money annually for capital campaigns over and above the tuition to attend.  No statement has been released on projected tuition costs.

If you would like to learn more about having your child attend South Surrey Catholic Academy  please go to http://sscacademy.ca.  They are also asking families of Current grade 7 students if they would like to attend SSCA’s Legacy Class for the 2017-2018 school year.

You can also pick up a letter from the office that explains more about SSCA.

Reminders

INCLEMENT WEATHER

With the cold and rainy season upon us, please make sure your children are appropriately dressed for the weather. Students are expected to go outside for recess in order to get some exercise and fresh air. Coats, gloves, hats and boots are recommended, depending on the weather. Please make sure your child has everything he or she needs before coming to school.

ABSENT NOTES

If your child is away for any reason, it is imperative that an absentee note be sent to the school indicating the reason of the absenteeism.  The Ministry of Education requires a note from students who are absent.  Failing to submit a note may jeopardize your funding from the government.

Registration Numbers

Our numbers are increasing at a very steady rate. This means that our classes have less available space for new families.  Please note, on March 6th, 2017, any families who have not re-registered will have their space given to a new family.  Once the class is full a waiting list will be created.

As of this morning we only have 12 spaces left in the entire school:

K – Full – Waiting list

Gr. 1 – 3 spaces available

Gr. 2 – 1 space available

Gr. 3 – 2 spaces available

Gr. 4 – 1 space available

Gr. 5 – Full – Waiting list

Gr. 6 – Full – Waiting list

Gr. 7 – 5 spaces available

A full school is a healthy school.  It allows for the growth of many programs and opportunities for students.  If you know of someone who would like to attend out school, please have them hand in an application form to the office.
