SUBSTANCE USE POLICY

October 17th, 2018, marks the day when cannabis use become legal in Canada.

St. Bernadette School is committed to the health and safety of its students and anyone attending at the School. The School recognizes that the use of drugs, tobacco, vapour products, alcohol, certain medications, and impairment generally can have serious effects on students and the learning environment. Accordingly, the School is committed to preventing substance use and impairment on school property, and at all times during school hours.

The PEC has approved a policy that addresses these issues and the issues that surround the use of medical cannabis.  You can read the policy below.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

With the cold and rainy season coming, please make sure your child is appropriately dressed for the weather. Students are expected to go outside for recess in order to get some exercise and fresh air. Coats, gloves, hats and boots are recommended, depending on the weather. Please make sure your child has everything he or she needs before coming to school.

If it is raining when your child comes to school, the students are permitted to go directly into the classrooms. They must still go through their designated doors and not through the front doors. Any outdoor footwear must be removed immediately upon entering the school. Please make sure that all coats, boots, umbrellas, etc. are labeled with your child’s name.

STREET MINISTRY

We are supporting Street Ministry again this year. One way the children can support this ministry is by donating leftover Halloween  candy. A donation  box will be placed in the front hallway. Thank you for your ongoing support and thoughtfulness. It is through your generosity that we are able to carry out God’s ministry.

HALLOWEEN COSTUMES

This is a reminder that St. Bernadette School will allow students to dress up for Halloween. Student who wish not to dress up may come in Halloween colours or they may wear their uniform.

If your child is coming in costume we would like to once again remind you of the following:

1. Children are not to wear costumes that would be deemed inappropriate.  We ask that costumes refrain from portraying violent characters and/or images, and promoting characters and/or imagery that depicts parts of society that causes harm to others.

2. All weapons, no matter how fake or harmless they are (foam, cardboard, etc.), must be kept at home. We have had great success in the past with families complying with this request.

3. When entering the school property we ask that for identity and safety purposes that masks and hoods are removed.  They can wear their masks during the Halloween Parade

Please remember that wearing a costume is a privilege and the principal reserves the right to ask any student to remove their costume for any reason.

We will have our annual Costume Parade for the students at 1:00pm on Halloween. Parents are more than welcome to come and watch the students parade from classroom to classroom.

REMINDERS

CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK

Any parents who wish to volunteer at the school to work one on one with students and wish to volunteer to drive students must have a criminal record check.  You can apply for the Criminal Record Check on line,

The online link is :    https://justice.gov.bc.ca/eCRC/home.htm

Access Code is: V5BDJZSE9J

There is no cost associated with the criminal check if you are volunteering.

USED UNIFORMS

Used uniforms are needed to help re-stock the shelves for our used uniforms.  If you have any used uniform items to donate, please contact Angeline at:  useduniforms@stbernadette.ca

All proceeds generated from the sales of used uniforms comes directly back to the school.

LABEL YOUR UNIFORMS

We notice that quite often we find uniforms in the lost and found without student names on it. It is important to label your uniforms and to relabel them throughout the year if you are using a marker on a tag.

AMBITION IS EITHER

A SERVANT OR A MASTER.

THE TRICK IS TO KNOW WHICH
