SCHOOL CLOSURE

In the event of weather conditions, or unforeseen circumstances, the pastor, chairperson and principal will decide whether or not the school will be open on that day. Notice of school closures will be announced on CKNW 980 on the AM dial and posted on the school website when possible. Please do not call the school; it is important that we keep all lines free in case of an emergency.

HALLOWEEN CANDY

We will be collecting hallowe’en candy again this year.  The Grade 7 students will be putting together candy bags for St. Vincent de Paul Society.  There will be a box in the school hallway by the office for the candy donations. Thank you for your ongoing support and thoughtfulness. It is through your generosity that we are able to carry out God’s ministry to those who are less fortunate.

SIBLINGS

If you have a child who will be entering Kindergarten in September 2018, please provide the office with his/her name along with birthdate.

STUDENT CONFERENCES

Research has shown that parental involvement is the most important factor in a student’s success at school. The first student conference of the school year provides a great opportunity for you and your child’s teacher to share insights and information about him/her.

Student  conferences are scheduled for Thursday, November 16th and Friday, November 17th.

The time of your child’s conference will be sent home with your child. We strongly encourage all parents to attend as these conferences provide an excellent opportunity to establish better communication between parents and teachers.

2018-2019 APPLICATION FORMS

We are now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year.  With increased interest in our school, the demand for spots also increases.  We are estimating 20 or less spots for Kindergarten and only one or two spots per grade from 1 – 7.  If you know of someone who would like to attend St. Bernadette, please have them pick up an application form from the school/parish or download one from our website.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS

Congratulations to our Grade 5 and 6 girls volleyball teams for making it to the final 16 Volleyball Championship.  Both teams finished 1st in their zones and will host playoff games next week at our school.  We are very proud of our program at all levels, all the players and their coaches for the fantastic season. We wish them all the best next week.

Reminders

INCLEMENT WEATHER

With the cold and rainy season coming, please make sure your children are appropriately dressed for the weather. Students are expected to go outside for recess in order to get some exercise and fresh air. Coats, gloves, hats and boots are recommended, depending on the weather. Please make sure your child has everything he or she needs before coming to school.

If it is raining when your child comes to school, the students are permitted to go directly into the classrooms. They must still go through their designated doors and not through the front doors. Any outdoor footwear must be removed immediately upon entering the school. Please make sure that all coats, boots, umbrellas, etc. are labeled with your child’s name.

HOLY CHILDHOOD

Last month students were given a Holy Childhood donation box. Students are asked to have their donation box returned to the school no later than Wednesday, November 8th.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL SUPERVISION

The school provides supervision in the mornings from 8:30am to the start of school and from the end of school for 15mins after the bell.

If your child arrives at school prior to 8:30am, for their safety, they will be brought into our Stingers Activity Club for supervision.  The same is true for after school.  The families will be charged the drop in rate when your child is brought into the club.

When a child is on school property before or after these times, a parent must have a sightline on their child at all times and be able to reach their child within seconds.  Watching your child from your car or being inside the gym while your child plays outside is not acceptable and your child will be brought to Stingers Activity Club for supervision.

We have seen an increased issue with children staying on school property after school.  Although we encourage families to stay and play, it is the parents responsibility to provide excellence in supervision for their child and the children under their care, and to follow the school rules – this includes students not allowed indoors after the dismissal bell has rung unless they have explicit permission from the principal, supervising teacher or the office.

We would like to thank you for your attention into this matter so that all our children are safe and properly supervised.

REPAIRS TO THE CHURCH

As you may or may not know, the church is undergoing repairs to the altar that will be completed at the end of next week.  During this time Mass will be held in the parish hall.  The school Mass on Nov. 2nd will be moved to Nov. 30th as the hall cannot accommodate the size of our school. All school activities planned for the parish hall  have alternate arrangements made with the school or parish office.  Mass will still be in the Church for Saturday Evening/Sunday Mass.

SAFETY IN OUR SCHOOL PARKING LOT

Last year we had new lines painted in the parking lot to increase child safety. The design provides students with more activities during recess and provides better safety measures during school hours. The solid yellow line running parallel to the school field and playground is not to be crossed by any vehicle from 7am (the start of Stingers Club) to 6pm (the end of Stingers Club). This is to ensure proper safety for our students.

Please DO NOT stop your vehicle in the breezeway or NO PARKING area to drop off your child, you must park your vehicle in a parking stall.

We have made a change to the parking for the safety of everyone.  The stalls in the front row of the parking lot and the stalls along the north east fence are now for STAFF ONLY.  Please do not park in these designated parking stalls.

We ask that you familiarize yourself with the drop off and pick up routines in the parent handbook. (If you don’t have a handbook you can download one off our website).

We will continue to close the alleyway beside the church hall.  Although this provides a service for parents who want to quickly drop off their child and go, there are too many safety breaches and concerns.  The vast majority of our parking lot incidents occurred when the alleyway was open.  It will remain closed indefinitely.

The safety of your child is of our upmost concern.  We will take every measure granted to us to enforce these rules with everyone who uses our lot.  We thank you in advance for attending to these requests.

USED UNIFORMS

We are accepting good, clean used uniforms at the school.  A bin is located across from the office.  If you are in need of a uniform please email useduniforms@stbernadette.ca to make your request.  Please have all the sizing information listed in your email
