MESSAGE FROM THE CWL

Dear Staff, PEC, Parents and Students of St Bernadette School,

I thank you on behalf of St Bernadette CWL and the Convention Committee for your support and assistance in making the CWL Diocesan Convention flow so smoothly.

Thank you to the staff and PEC for the monitoring you did (from 7am onward) in directing traffic on the school grounds was most appreciated.

Thank you to the parents for your ability to be flexible and adjust to our parking needs was recognized by convention participants.

Thank you to the students who sang in the choir, played the bells or served on the altar for Friday’s Mass, were angelic making our mass such a beautiful liturgy.

Thank you for recognizing our needs at convention. We work as a community. The St Bernadette Family is so friendly, caring and supportive of one another. We are blessed.

God Bless,
Doreen Junk, CWL President

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

Our prayers are with the grade 2 students this weekend as they receive their first Holy Communion.  We ask all the angels and saints to help prepare the way of Jesus into the hearts of our children.

STREET BEAT DANCE CLASSES

Next week the students will be involved in the Street Beat Dance Class.  These classes will be for 30mins every day except Thursday.  We ask all students to have their PE shoes and grade 2 – 7 students to have their gym strip with them all week.

MOTHER’S DAY TEA

Thank you to all who have sent in their attendance for our Mother’s Day Tea which is taking place Thursday, May 10. If you have not done so yet, please send in your notice as soon as possible. If you have volunteered as a dad in helping out, please be at school next Thursday at 8:30 to help out with our preparations.

NOTES FROM PARENTS

We require a signed note from a parent when:

• your child has been absent from school for any reason

• your child needs to leave the school for an appointment, etc.

• your child cannot participate in a specific activity

• your child cannot go outdoors during recess or lunch break

• someone other than yourself picking up your child early from school (early dismissal)

Once school has started, children who are late or who have to leave the school early MUST sign in or out at the office.

ABSENT NOTES

If your child is away for any reason, it is imperitive that an absentee note be submitted to the school indicating the reason of the absenteeism.  The Ministry of Education requires a note from students who are absent.  Failing to submit a note may jeopardize your funding from the government.

NOTIFICATION OF CAREGIVERS

If someone else is going to be your child(ren)’s caregiver/guardian, whether it is for one day or one week, please give this information to the school office. In the event of an emergency, it is extremely important that you notify the school if you are going to be away and someone else will be looking after your child(ren).

REMINDERS

SCHOOL RANKINGS

The 2018-2019 school rankings have been published and once again St. Bernadette’s finished in the top 100 school in British Columbia.  Our ranking of 57th out of 811 school makes us one of the top schools in Surrey and is part of a trend that shows consistent improvement in the writing of the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA).

Although we are proud of our ranking, it is just a snapshot of last year’s grade 4 and 7 students. The data does not show the excellent work we do at the other grade levels.  The data does not show the care and attention we take to teach to other aspects of your child, that being the social, emotional, physical and spiritual characteristics of the whole child.  The data does not take into account the exceptional work we do in special education.  And it does not take into account the tremendous work of our parents and the school community to make St. Bernadette’s such a wonderful and safe school for our children.

We are a fantastic school in every aspect of education.  I am very proud of our staff and the time and effort they place in each and every child.  I am proud of our enrolment and the families that are currently in our school.  We all should be proud of the success we have accomplished and continue to accomplish as the year continues.

The rankings will change from year to year, but what remains constant is the safe, welcoming and dedicated community of parents, teachers and students we have created, the high learning standards we have established for our students, and the faith filled approach to education that makes us who we are.

We are all very blessed to be able to say “I am a member of St. Bernadette’s School” and these rankings are just one part of a much larger picture.

ST. BERNADETTE TRACK MEET APPRECIATION

I would like to thank everyone who came out to support the students in our first track meet of the year.  It was once again a very successful meet and that is in thanks to the many volunteers who took time out of their day to be with us.  I especially would like to thank Rosie Gopal and Angeline Yaschyshyn and their crew for running a fantastic concession stand.  I would also like to thank all the parents at the finish line who were involved in handing out ribbons and timing athletes.  Special thanks to Ms. De Sousa for leading the meet, Mrs. Schollen for leading the team at the finish line, Mrs. Hillard for her timings, Mrs. Stuart and Mrs. Bennett for announcing, and Mrs. Bourassa and Mrs. Peck for coaching and managing the team.  I would also like to thank all the other parents who were there to lead athletes to events, who jumped in to help when a volunteer was needed and who were there to support the team.  Finally, I would like to thank all the staff and teachers who taught combined classes for the day so that we could be allowed to run the meet in a safe and orderly manner.  It is another example of how our community comes together to create fantastic experiences and memories for our children.

FLEA MARKET APPRECIATION

St. Bernadette School would like to thank everyone who helped out with the Flea Market on the weekend.  A special thank you to Tracy Kiley, Cathy Lan and their crew of volunteers who organized and ran the event.  It saw a great turn out and was another wonderful community building event that supported the school in many ways.
