VIRTUE OF THE MONTH

The virtue of the month for June is Patience.  It is such a fitting virtue at this time of the year not just for the students but for us educators and parents.  It feels like it is go, go, go (for some of us it might feel this way all year round!) and that commitments and final preparations before the summer break comes keep piling up.  The virtue of patience reminds us that all though we want to hurry up and get things done, or have things come, we need to rest in the watchful embrace of God.  As we know from Elijah, we can’t find God in the noise, but in the silence “a tiny whisper sound”.  When we are trying to be patient, it is good to stop and listen to the tiny whisper of God’s voice.

BANNER RAISING CEREMONY

Our school will be hosting its first every banner raising ceremony at 2:30pm on Tuesday June 7th.  This is in celebration of our 1st and 3rd place finished at CISVA basketball and volleyball Championships. Matt LeChascheur, Head Coach at Holy Cross, along with some former alumni will be the guest speakers.  The event is open to everyone, so please consider arriving a little early on that day and watch as we unveil what we hope to be the start of many more championships in the future for our school.

SPORTS/FUN DAY

This year’s theme for the Sports/Fun is Rio Olympics .  Sports Day is on Friday, June 10th.  We will post the schedule of events in next week’s newsletter.  Dismissal will be at 12:15pm.

The schedule is posted near the bottom of this newsletter.

2016-2017 SCHOOL STAFF

I am happy to announce that St. Bernadette’s will be welcoming two new teachers to our community.

First we would like to welcome our new music teacher Mr. Cos Natola.  Some of you may remember him from his days at Holy Cross High School.  He comes to us with a wealth of talent and accomplishments in music and drama.  We are very excited to have him as part of our fine arts program.

We also welcome Ms. Karen De Sousa. Some of your children may have had her as a TOC over the last two years.  Ms. De Sousa has a depth of knowledge of the redesigned curriculum, is well informed in managing diversity in the classroom, is very active in her parish  and possesses and overall love and commitment to children.  Karen is a recent graduate of SFU and has been working full-time as of late in a grade 2 classroom in Richmond.

Please extend a warm welcome to both Cos and Karen when you see them next!

With these announcements, we are able to share the teaching assignments for next year:

Kindergarten – Mrs. Schollen

Grade 1 – Mrs. Misiti – Mrs. Hillard is currently on maternity leave.

Grade 2 – Mrs. De Sousa, Mrs. Fraser

Grade 3 – Mrs. Beliveau, Mrs. Wagg – We welcome back Mrs. Wagg from her maternity leave!

Grade 4 – Mrs. Beliveau, Mrs. Stuart

Grade 5 – Mrs. Bourassa

Grade 6 – Mrs. Peck

Grade 7 – Mrs. Kosman

Music – Mr. Natola

French – Mrs. Fraser

Learning Resource – Mrs. Wilczewski

Physical Education – Mr. van der Pauw

On behalf of the entire school community, I would like to take this time to recognize those staff members who have served our school well over the years and are leaving at the end of June:

The St. Bernadette school community thanks:

Mrs. Albrecher for her many years of service to the students of our school.  Mrs. Albrecher has decided to retire at the end of this year.  We extend warm wishes as she begins a new chapter in her life.

Mrs. Fong for several years of service to the school.  Mrs. Fong has also made the decision to retire at the end of this school year.  We wish Mrs. Fong all the best as she embarks on this new stage in her life!  We look forward to seeing Mrs. Albrecher and Mrs. Fong in the school periodically as they both have expressed a desire to stay in contact with the school as teachers-on-call.

Mr. Cheveldave for his many years of service to the school.  Mr. Cheveldave will still be active in the Catholic school system as he will begin his new position at Star of the Sea starting in September.  We wish him well in his new position.

Mrs. Fawcett for all her years of service as our music teacher.  Mrs. Fawcett will also continue to work in the system as the music teacher at St. Matthew’s.  We wish her all the best.

Mrs. Chu for her time in the school where she wore many hats serving our students.  We wish her and her family all the best in the years to come.

Mrs. Hope for her time at the school serving as an Special Education Assistant.  We wish her and her family well as she extends her leave permanently.

Finally, we wish Fr. Vincent Hawkswell and Fr. Camillus well as they are leaving our parish.  We wish Fr. Vincent all the best as he returns to his duties as a retired priest once again.  We thank him for filling in for Fr. Paul and wish him all the best as he attempts to once again be retired.  We wish Fr. Camillus well in his new diocesan assignment.

CISVA TRACK MEET DAY 2

I would like to begin by congratulating all the students on their efforts and school spirit that they showed in Day 1 of competition.  The day started off sunny and hot and ended cold and wet.  The 100M heats were cancelled due to poor track conditions.  They will now be raced on Wednesday June 8th with the other Day 2 events.  Once an updated schedule is provided, parents will be notified.  We are in great need of drivers for the meet.  If you child is attending we hope you are able to drive them and cheer them on.

UNIFORM FITTINGS

Uniform fittings will be available starting next Tuesday, May 17th 2:30-3:30 and Thursday, May 19th 8:30-9:15 in the PE Office, located next to the gym. This will be ongoing until the end of the school year.  Tuesdays & Thursday are the ONLY DAYS that the fittings are available.

REMINDERS

ABSENTEE  NOTES

St. Bernadette School will be having their yearly attendance audit THIS month. Students who have been absent must have an absent note on file with the days & reason  of absenteeism along with the parent signature. It is not the school’s responsibility to ensure that a note is on hand. Failure in not having an absent note for the days absence could result in families having to pay a portion of the provincial funding. So if you are aware of any absent note(s) that has not been handed in to the office, please send it in at your earliest convenience.

PARENT PARTICIPATION OPPORTUNITIES

It is that time of the year where we all need to make sure our volunteer hours are complete.  There are many opportunities for you to complete your hours in a variety of ways.  Below are some opportunities to help you complete your hours

APPLICATION FOR NEW FAMILIES

We are currently accepting applications for new families.  The response from new families that have already applied has been extremely positive.  Many of the families have applied due to the positive and affirming feedback they have received.  All of the families we have interviewed are very excited to join our community and are eager to get involved.

We are very thankful to have such amazing families in our school.  Thank you for sharing your experiences with your families, friends, co-workers, and neighbours.  It makes us stronger as a community and it ultimately benefits the education of your child and the new families that join us.

If you know of someone who would benefit from having their child(ren) at our school, please have them contact us or direct them to our website to download an application form.
