 DECEMBER 13TH – CHRISTMAS CONCERT

St. Bernadette School Annual Christmas Concert will be held tomorrow, Thursday December 13th immediately following the Lights of Hope Ceremony.  Students are asked to be at the school no later than 6pm and are invited into the parish hall for cookies and hot chocolate (Gr. 7 is asked to be at the school by 5:45pm).  At around 6:05pm everyone is invited to the courtyard where Fr. Paul will bless the lights and they will be turned on for the first time this year.

Immediately following the ceremony, students will head to the classroom to meet their teacher and parents & guests are welcome to enter into the church to find their seat.  We ask parents to remind their guests that although we are in the church to watch a performance, we are still in a place of worship and proper etiquette applies.

COMMUNICATING STUDENT LEARNING (CSL REPORTS)

The Ministry of Education requires schools to issue 5 formal reports to parents each school year.  At St. Bernadette’s we report out through 2 conferences and 3 written reports.  This year, to align more fully with new curriculum standards and reporting practices, we are modifying our written reports.  There will be 2 summative reports (now known as Communicating Student Learning [CSL] Reports) and 1 formative interim report.  The interim report will be very similar to the summative reports.  The main difference is that the interim report will focus mainly on the core subject areas.

In addition this this, the school will be phasing out letter grades.  Many school are taking the leap to remove them all together this year, however we have decided to do this gradually. Starting this year, only grade 6 and 7 will receive letter grades.  They will be in the areas of Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science.  Next year we will not have letter grades in the school.  Many high schools, including Holy Cross, are making similar changes when it comes to letter grades.

SPIRIT WEEK

Next week is spirit week where we celebrate the last week of school before Christmas break.

Monday: PJ and Bedhead Day – come to school in your festive pyjamas with your messy hair. Lunch time Christmas Trivia in the gym for grade 5-7 students.

Tuesday: Twin Day – Grab a friend or friends to match clothing with them and show your Christmas spirit.  The school will be doing a baking activity after recess.

Wednesday: Favourite Christmas Wear Day – Show your Christmas spirit by dressing as your favourite Christmas and/or biblical character.  After lunch we will be hosting our annual Teachers vs Grade 7s Gladiator events.

Thursday: Christmas Colour Wear Day – Arrive to school in your favourite Christmas colours.  Students will be invited into a Christmas fun house in the library learning commons.

Friday: Ugly Christmas Sweater Day – *Students whose clothing may cause distractions, are asked to refrain from wearing it to Church and to put it on after Mass*

Come to school wearing your creative, craziest, most fun Christmas sweaters and clothing.  After recess we will watch a Christmas movie and have a sing-a-long.  12pm dismissal.

REMINDERS

CHILDREN BORN IN 2014

If you have a child who was born in 2014 and will be attending St. Bernadette School, it’s time to notify the school office so that we can keep a space open for your child. It is very important that we have an accurate numbers of siblings for Kindergarten.

FAMILY CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

Dear Families,

This Christmas season we at St. Bernadette are excited to start a new tradition.

We are inviting all families in the school to bring in a Christmas ornament (bought or handmade) with your family name and the year your family started at St. Bernadette written on it. Families who wish to participate can drop off their ornament to the office anytime.  We will start placing the ornaments on the tree starting the first week of December.

The Family Tree will be located in the alcove between the learning commons and the gym. All ornaments brought in will be displayed every year.

We look forward to seeing all the ornaments and recognizing all the wonderful families we have in our community!

SCHOOL CLOSURE

In the event of weather conditions, or unforeseen circumstances, the pastor, chairperson and principal will decide whether or not the school will be open on that day. Notice of school closures will be announced on CKNW 980 on the AM dial and posted on the school website when possible. Please do not call the school; it is important that we keep all lines free in case of an emergency.

USED UNIFORMS

Used uniforms are needed to help re-stock the shelves for our used uniforms.  If you have any used uniform items to donate, please contact Angeline at:  useduniforms@stbernadette.ca

All proceeds generated from the sales of used uniforms comes directly back to the school.

When one door of happiness closes,

another opens; but we often look so long at the closed door

that we do not see the one

that has been opened for us!!!
