Dear Parents,
On behalf of the staff at St. Bernadette School I would like to wish you and your family a happy, safe and blessed Thanksgiving. As a school we are very thankful for the community we have created together. We have a community that is committed to excellence in our students. We have a community that is supportive and caring toward each other. We have a community that shares in the faith, values and virtues found in the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Together we are creating something special for our children that is going to allow them to be the best versions of themselves. We do this through our teachings, the programs we have created, and our faith. God made each and everyone of our students perfect and it is our job to honour that perfection.
I can’t thank you enough for the great start to the year and all the wonderful things to come. I hope you are able to take the time this extra-long weekend (remember no school Monday and Tuesday) to be with your family and enjoy your time together.
May God’s blessing be with you now and always.

A special thank you to Ms. De Sousa who stepped in to help as Mr. van der Pauw was unable to coach due to his duties as Cross Country Commissioner for the event. Also a very big thank you to all the parents who drove and stayed to help get the students organized and to their races. It truly was a team effort and we are very appreciated of your commitment to our athletic program.

If it is raining when your child comes to school, the students are permitted to go directly into the classrooms. They must still go through their designated doors and not through the front doors. Any outdoor footwear must be removed immediately upon entering the school. Please make sure that all coats, boots, umbrellas, etc. are labeled with your child’s name.

LOCKDOWN DRILL
Dear Parents,
As part of our safety preparedness, we conducted our first safety drill for the year. Throughout the year we will focus on three types of emergencies:
1) Lockdown
2) Earthquake
3) Fire
Yesterday we conducted a lockdown drill. In the event of a lockdown staff and students quickly get into a position where they are out of sight and out of harms way. We conduct two types of lockdown drills:
1) The danger is on-site, but not in the school
2) The danger is in the school
I was very impressed with the effectiveness of the drill today as we conducted a danger on-site drill. Throughout the year we will be conducting more drills and working on the effectiveness of each drill.
Soon we will be practicing an Earthquake Drill. Our school is equipped with the Early Earthquake Warning System (EEWS). This system can give the school around 30 seconds of warning before an earthquake hits. This is valuable time that will save lives. As a result of having this system in our school, we will now practice our Earthquake Drills based on the siren from the EEWS. All other safety procedures remain in place.
Thanks again for all your support as we begin a new school year. We are so privileged to belong to a wonderful school community. I am looking forward to the rest of the year.
STINGERS CLUB
If there is a possibility that you will be dropping off your child at the Stingers Club for “Drop In”, you are required to fill in the registration form. This is necessary in the event of an emergency with your child. Forms for the Stinger Club are available at the front office.

FIRE DRILL
Yesterday we conducted our first fire drill of the year. As part of our safety plans, we will conduct three fire drills in the fall and three fire drills in the spring. Our fire safety plan has three major objectives:
• Fire Hazard Control
• Fire Emergency Evacuation Procedures
• Fire Protection System Maintenance
We address these objectives by being in accordance with the Fire Safety Plan and BC Fire Code. Our goal is to minimize the risk to those at St. Bernadette’s by ensuring that in the event of a fire emergency, everyone will be able to safely evacuate the school via the nearest exit. Fire drills also allow us to inspect and test procedures for our fire protection systems.
Our fire safety plan identifies potential fire hazards to be prevented in at St. Bernadette’s and it provides an outline of procedures to be followed in the event that an emergency evacuation is ever necessary.
I am very pleased with the effort and attention the teachers have provided when it comes to the safety of your child(ren). The fire drill was done with efficiency and great attention to detail. Everyone was evacuated quickly and safely. I am confident that if such an emergency was to occur where we had to evacuate the school immediately, it would be done so in a very effective and safe manner.
If you have any questions regarding safety in our school, please contact Mr. van der Pauw through the school office.

WELCOME BACK PANCAKE BREAKFAST
Last year we wanted to do something special to bring our families together to start the year. Our pancake breakfast was so successful we have decided to do it again this year. From 9am – 10am enjoy a pancake breakfast hosted by the KofC in our parish hall. Immediately after breakfast student will head to class and get ready for the Flag Raising Ceremony (Parents are welcome to attend – it will be at our flag pole – weather permitting). Kindergarten will have their own schedule for the day.
The pancake breakfast is also a perfect time to welcome the new families into our school community. One of the strengths and draws of St. Bernadette’s is our sense of family. If you are a new family please stop by the PEC table to get your welcome package.

SCHOOL CALENDAR
Our Calendar is now updated for the 2016-2017 school year. The school exclusively uses google calendar and events are added and changed throughout the year. Please check the calendar regularly. It is best practice to add the calendar to your own google calendar so that you can see the updates as they happen (there is a + symbol at the bottom of the calendar for you to click to add). You can find our calendar under our “School Life” tab on our website.
STINGERS CLUB
We already have a healthy amount of registrants for our club and we are expecting more in the next few weeks. The hours are from 7am – 8:30am and 3pm – 6pm school days (Wednesdays are 2:15pm – 6pm). For the half days during the school year, we are now offering the Stingers Club after school on those days.
The stingers club is open to all students. It offers fun activities and learning opportunities beyond the classroom. If you would like more information, please contact the office or download a form from our website.
NUT AWARE SCHOOL
St. Bernadette’s is a nut aware school. Please remember that no nuts of any kind are permitted in the school, due to severe food allergies. Individual classes may have other dietary restrictions based on the students in that class. If this is the case for your classroom, you will be notified.
WASTE FREE LUNCH
St. Bernadette’s promotes a waste free lunch. Students will pack in and pack out their lunches. This helps with the composting measures and allow parents to monitor their child’s nutrition at school.
MEET THE TEACHER/ PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT
Please mark your calendars for September 22nd Meet the Teacher/Parent Information Night. The evening begins at 6:30 in the parish hall. RETURNS/EXCHANGES
• If your school allows returns to be left with the reception, the next scheduled pick up for returns is on September 9th at your school. This does not apply to all schools.
• Families requiring a return or exchange prior to this date must ship their return to Cambridge Uniforms directly (we suggest using Canada Post), this will expedite the process of individual orders.
• If there is a need for a rush return or exchange our suggestion is that a new order be placed. The returned goods can be sent back with the school pick up on September 9th and Cambridge Uniforms will issue a refund once received.
• Our Return/Exchange form can be found on our website at http://www.cambridgeuniforms.com/returns. All returns must be accompanied by this form.
Returns please mail to:

LABEL YOUR UNIFORMS
We notice that quite often we find uniforms in the lost and found without student names on it. It is important to label your uniforms and to relabel them throughout the year if you are using a marker on a tag.
God of wisdom and might,
we praise you for the wonder of our being,
for mind, body and spirit.
Be with our children as they begin
a new school year.
Bless them and their teachers and staff.
Give the strength and grace as their bodies grow;
wisdom and knowledge to their minds
as they search for understanding;
and peace and zeal to their hearts.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
