October 31st – Hallowe’en Parade 1:30
November 1st – All Saints Day
November 2nd – Daylight Savings Time Ends
VIRTUE OF THE MONTH
For the month of November we will be focusing on the virtue of hope. Hope is one of the three theological virtues. Our hope is to enter into the kingdom of heaven and have eternal life as our happiness. We place our trust and hope in Christ’s promises to us. Hope is part of the foundation of our Christian moral activity. It is with this in mind that we ask student to think of how Hope directs our actions and words. How are we preparing oursleves to enter into God’s kingdom?
Throughout the month of November we will have several opportunities during class and though various gatherings to focus our attention on this virtue. One activity that can be done at home is reading with your child The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-16) where Jesus gives us hope through the beatitudes.
REMEMBRANCE DAY POPPIES
Grade Six students will be visiting each classroom on a daily basis starting Monday, November 3rd until Monday, November 10th with poppies. A donation of any amount is required to purchase poppies; all proceeds are given directly to the Canadian Legion.
SCHOOL CLOSURE
In the event of weather conditions, or unforeseen circumstances, the pastor, chairperson and principal will decide whether or not the school will be open on that day. Notice of school closures will be announced on CKNW 980 on the AM dial and posted on the school website when possible. Please do not call the school; it is important that we keep all lines free in case of an emergency.
OUTREACH
The Grade 7’s are involved in a community outreach program to help the homeless and less fortunate people in our community. Every second Tuesday a group of three Grade 7 students, along with Mrs. Kosman, Mrs. Gelz, and Mrs. Spanjers head down to Keys: Housing and Health Solution in Surrey to hand out breakfast bags and hot chocolate at the Front Room Shelter. This has been a very rewarding experience in the past and we would like to continue doing so throughout this school year. Money is needed to purchase the food for the breakfast bags; as well the students want to put together a “Cold Weather Gift Bag” for the homeless (hats, gloves, socks, etc).
In time for Christmas, we will be having our annual cookie and pie sale. The money raised from the cookie & pie sale will go towards the Outreach Program. If you do not wish to purchase cookies or pies but would still like to contribute to this wonderful program we will gratefully accept your donations. Please mark donation “Outreach”.
Order forms went home last week, if you have misplaced or need another order form there is one attached. Thank you for your support.
SVDP STREET MINISTRY
The SSVP Street Ministry plans to give Christmas gifts to the needy in Whalley Sunday December 7th. This is a request to you to ask the school children /parishioners if they would like to help in this by donating the following:
Used backpacks of any size and description; ones they no longer wish to use themselves but that could still be useful for the homeless to store their small belongings; and gently used, or even new, men’s gloves. We find that men’s gloves are expensive whereas women’s gloves can usually be bought for around $l/pair. Any help that the children /parishioners can give us would be greatly appreciated, as well as keeping our costs down, while still providing the needy with practical gift items.
We have set our deadline for receiving donations at SUNDAY NOVEMBER 30 so as to allow us time to assemble our gifts and to purchase whatever we can if necessary.
We appreciate very much any help you are able to give us. Many thanks and blessings from Susi and the Street Ministry. Please drop donations off in the Gathering Room.
HALLOWEEN DRESS UP
Friday, October 31st students may come to school in costume or dress in Hallowe’en colours. If your child is coming in costume please remember that children are not to wear costumes that would be deemed inappropriate. We ask that costumes refrain from portraying violent characters and/or images, and promoting characters and/or imagery that depicts parts of society that causes harm to other . All weapons, no matter how fake or harmless they are (foam, cardboard, etc.), must be kept at home. We will have a costume Parade for the students on that day.
HALLOWE’EN CANDY
We will be collecting hallowe’en candy again this year. The Grade 7 students will be putting together candy bags for our Outreach Program which will then be handed out on our visits to the Front Room shelter. There will be a box in the school hallway by the office for the candy donations. Thank you for your ongoing support and thoughtfulness. It is through your generosity that we are able to carry out God’s ministry to those who are less fortunate.
INCLEMENT WEATHER
With the cold and rainy season coming, please make sure your children are appropriately dressed for the weather. Students are expected to go outside for recess in order to get some exercise and fresh air. Coats, gloves, hats and boots are recommended, depending on the weather. Please make sure your child has everything he or she needs before coming to school.

MORNING DROP OFF & AFTER SCHOOL
If you are dropping off in the morning we ask that you use the drop off lane that runs adjacent to the Parish Centre. If you are staying at the school in the morning please park in the upper area of the parking lot and walk your child to the playground area. This part of our routine is as follows: we will use the west gate of the parking lot (marked “Enter Only”) to enter the parking lot and the east gate of the parking lot (marked “Exit Only”) as our only way to exit the parking lot. The configuration of the cones to allow traffic to flow through the parking lot to the “Exit Only” gate. If using the drop off area near the Parish Centre, please stop at the speed bump, once your children have left your vehicle they are to stay behind the cones as they enter the playground. Volunteers are in the parking lot helping to direct traffic. Safety of the children is our primary concern, please remember to drive slowly. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
