THANK YOU
On behalf of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul here at St. Bernadette, I would like to thank all of the students, teachers and principal, as well as all of the supportive parents, for the successful conclusion of your food raising project. The Principal told me that he had hoped to raise 400 items [2 per student], but in fact you raised 1527 food items [8 per student]. That is an incredible success. You know, when we sometimes think of the hungry, we often think of those in far away lands, but in fact there are 1.3 million children in Canada living below the poverty line, and in B.C. alone, 153,000 children live below the poverty line, or one in five children. So in fact there may be families on your street [ maybe even your neighbor],and families living on your block that are living below this poverty line, and go to bed and get up hungry, and may even come to school without breakfast. Your successful project will go a long way towards helping some of these families and children, and you deserve to be very proud of your accomplishment in making this food drive such a success. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul thanks all of you girls and boys, as well as your school staff and parents for helping us to help others.

Our hope is to enter into the kingdom of heaven and have eternal life as our happiness. We place our trust and hope in Christ’s promises to us. Hope is part of the foundation of our Christian moral activity. It is with this in mind that we ask student to think of how Hope directs our actions and words. How are we preparing ourselves to enter into God’s kingdom?
Throughout the month of November we will have several opportunities during class and though various gatherings to focus our attention on this virtue. One activity that can be done at home is reading with your child The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-16) where Jesus gives us hope through the beatitudes.

HALLOWE’EN CANDY
We are collecting hallowe’en candy again this year. The Grade 7 students will be putting together candy bags for our Outreach Program which will then be handed out on our visits to the Front Room shelter. There will be a box in the school hallway by the office for the candy donations. Thank you for your ongoing support and thoughtfulness. It is through your generosity that we are able to carry out God’s ministry to those who are less fortunate.
SVDP STREET MINISTRY
The SSVP Street Ministry plans to give Christmas gifts to the needy in Whalley Sunday December 7th. This is a request to you to ask the school children /parishioners if they would like to help in this by donating the following:
Used backpacks of any size and description; ones they no longer wish to use themselves but that could still be useful for the homeless to store their small belongings; and gently used, or even new, men’s gloves. We find that men’s gloves are expensive whereas women’s gloves can usually be bought for around $l/pair. Any help that the children /parishioners can give us would be greatly appreciated, as well as keeping our costs down, while still providing the needy with practical gift items.
We have set our deadline for receiving donations at SUNDAY NOVEMBER 30 so as to allow us time to assemble our gifts and to purchase whatever we can if necessary.
We appreciate very much any help you are able to give us. Many thanks and blessings from Susi and the Street Ministry. Please drop donations off in the Gathering Room.

Dear Parents,
On November 18th, 2014 the Grade 5 boys volleyball team left the school bright and early in the morning to play in the CISVA championship tournament. The team was full of hope and excitement. The tournament was full of schools that we perennial participants. The team battled hard in all their games and at the end of it all, they returned to the school later that day as CISVA Champions!
I mention this in a letter because in our history, dating back to when the school first opened in 1986, this championship is the 1st one brought to the school. Every program in our school deserves accolades and attention when greatness is achieved. These boys achieved the highest honours possible and with them the school celebrates.
I believe that no one achieves greatness alone. A support system needs to exist. That is true for these boys and for the school. We achieve greatness because of our staff who are completely dedicated to see everyone become the best version of themselves. We achieve greatness because of our parents who are the primary educators are committed to providing the best education possible for their child. And we achieve greatness because of our history and our desire to always be the best school for your child.
We have come a long way since our beginnings and we have a bright future ahead. I want to thank everyone involved with the success of this great achievement and all those who dedicate their time and effort to the many programs in our school. You are an integral part of all of our successes.
Again, congratulations to all the boys and their families on the Grade 5 volleyball team. We are very proud of your accomplishments!

RE: Comfort Kits October 20th, 2014
Dear Parents,
In the event of an earthquake, St. Bernadette’s has enough food rations, water, and first aid supplies for every child in the school. In addition to these items, the school requests that each family sends a “comfort” package for each of their children at the school. This should contain:
– a note to the child telling them of your plans to get them from school as soon as possible,
– a family photo,
– a small game or deck of cards and perhaps a small cuddly toy (for the younger child).
This must fit into a 30cm x 26cm Ziploc bag. Larger bags and items that do not fit into the bag will be sent back home.
The kit will be stored in our emergency container until June. At that time the kits will be returned to the family and we will collect the kits back again the following year. The school takes safety of your child very seriously. We ask that you spend some time and have an age appropriate conversation with your child(ren) about emergencies and how your child(ren) should behave in such a situation.
We thank you for your support in this matter. Please bring the comfort kits to the school before October 31st, 2014.
Yours in Christ,

OUTREACH
The Grade 7’s are involved in a community outreach program to help the homeless and less fortunate people in our community. Every second Tuesday a group of three Grade 7 students, along with Mrs. Kosman, Mrs. Gelz, and Mrs. Spanjers head down to Keys: Housing and Health Solution in Surrey to hand out breakfast bags and hot chocolate at the Front Room Shelter. This has been a very rewarding experience in the past and we would like to continue doing so throughout this school year. Money is needed to purchase the food for the breakfast bags; as well the students want to put together a “Cold Weather Gift Bag” for the homeless (hats, gloves, socks, etc).
In time for Christmas, we will be having our annual cookie and pie sale. The money raised from the cookie & pie sale will go towards the Outreach Program. If you do not wish to purchase cookies or pies but would still like to contribute to this wonderful program we will gratefully accept your donations. Please mark donation “Outreach”.

RE: 3 Way and Parent Teacher Conferences – November 27th & 28th
Dear Parents,
On November 26th the term 1 report cards will be sent home. In preparation for that day and the conferences that will follow, the office will be scheduling times for you to meet with the teacher and your child.
The staff has worked hard in making the conferences meaningful and productive for your child. Conferences are a time for reflection, celebration and preparing for the rest of the school year. With this in mind, we enhanced the conference process for this school year.
Parent Teacher Conferences – Gr. K – 2
If your child is in Kindergarten, Gr. 1, or Gr. 2, you will participate in Parent – Teacher meetings this term and do 3 – Way Conferences at the end of term two. The rationale is that more time is needed to help students with goal setting.
3-Way Conferences – Gr. 3 – 7
If your child is in Gr. 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7, you will participate in 3-Way Conferences this term and do Parent – Teacher meetings at the end of term two. The rationale is that students would benefit and have a great chance of success if goal setting was done at the start of the year instead of in March or April.
Please see back page for the schedule…
Schedule
Day 1 – Thursday November 27th
8:55 – 12:15pm – half day of school for students.
1pm – 4:30 – conferences
4:30 – 5:15 – meal break
5:15 – 8:00 – student conferences
Day 2 – Friday November 28th
Non-instructional day for students
8:30am – 12:00pm – student conferences
Very soon you will receive a notice from the office to book your conference time. Each child is given 15mins to meet with the teacher. We are asking all parents to be mindful of the time and to arrive at your meeting a few minutes early.
If you have any questions, please contact me through the office.
